Invasive Species

An invasive plant species is defined as a species that is a) non-native (or alien) to the ecosystem under consideration and b) whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health.

The threat of invasive plant species is continuing to grow at an exponential rate. Invasive plant or weed management plans are aimed at encouraging strategic approaches to the prevention, control or eradication of invasive plant species at the local level. One of the most important components of these plans is gathering data about the type of invasive plant species, its level and area of infestation, and the pathways of spread.

This website is aimed at providing key information to land owners and managers on invasive plant species. The site includes a database inventory of invasive plant species and downloadable map display. These tools can be used to help plan and identify priorities in local communities or regions across the Prairies.
